Is Photography Art?

Just as photography can be either seen as art, not seen as art, or a mixture of the two depending on the view of the individual asked, photographs themselves can be viewed as “good” or “bad”, and this view varies from person to person. Of course, there are certain types of photographs that are widely accepted as excellent or poor, as they sit on the far side of the spectrum. When it comes down to base values, what makes a photo “good” is how well it contributes to each of the factors the photographer and viewers were taking into consideration in order to find it appealing or appalling. A few examples of these factors include subject, lighting, techniques, framing, symbolism, and meaning. Each individual viewer may find that a photograph doesn’t yield to a certain factor that they had in mind enough or perhaps doesn’t fit the criteria they use to judge a photo. The only way to ensure that a photograph is good, or better than most for that matter, is to make it fit the criteria for YOU and hope that others think similarly. This is why I believe that photography is in fact art. You are expressing yourself in the best way possible according to YOU, and others who hold the same values.
